This guide is intended to provide constructive suggestions to help people stay safely connected to friends and family during a crisis where censorship or platform failure may become an issue. Having backup methods for connecting and sharing will help people to remain calm in uncertain times.  There are many possible solutions to the question of how to survive the 2021 digital world, these are my recommendations for most people.

Share it freely and stay connected to your friends and family.

Note: This page resides on the EOS blockchain. You are reading the EOS blockchain.

How to Use This Guide

This guide is setup for the reader to pick and choose to implement any of the below listed suggestions, however, if you can only do a few, or are wondering what to do first, it's probably a good idea to secure your devices using virus protection, secure your sensitive data using password management and connect with your social circles using social messaging and email. That will keep you safe and connected as possible. Do as much of the rest of this guide as you can, but secure your devices and data and establish multiple lines of redundant communications asap.

Secure Social Messaging & Email

Millions Flock to Telegram and Signal as Fears Grow Over Big Tech

I recommend that circles of friends and families get all three apps, Telegram, Signal and Proton Mail. Each has its own specialty so they all compliment each other while backing up each other three deep. One strategy is to use Telegram for more public facing engagements and signal more for your private groups of friends and family, and proton as a last resort when all else fails. You don't have to actively be using all three at the same time to enjoy the benefits of redundancy. Things can happen quickly and without warning in a crisis situation so having communication channels in place before it hits will increase the probability of staying connected.

Telegram

Telegram has the most users of all these options and lots of features.

Signal

Signal is considered the most secure messaging app available.

Proton Mail

Proton Mail is buried in 1000 feet of granite in the Swiss Alps and Swiss law.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This service offers end to end encryption which is best and means there is a MASTER PASSWORD that only you possess and CANNOT BE RECOVERED by any means.

You can change your password at anytime, but you need your current password to change it.  That is different from losing your password and resetting it.

  • There is no forget password link.

  • There is no way for anyone including the company offering the service to recover access to your account.  This is what makes it secure.

  • Keeping your master password safe and secure is key.

Virus Protection

ESET NOD32 ANTIVIRUS * Recommended

A history of success

ESET products consistently outperform the competition in terms of positive virus identification while actually making your computer feel faster and with virtually no work to keep them running smoothly. Highly recommended.

ESET has the longest unbroken run of VB100 awards for malware detection of any Internet security vendor in the world – we’ve passed every test since 2003.

Password Management

Password management is certainly a convenience for logging into general internet websites, but it is also very helpful when keeping safe your digital wallet private keys(similar to passwords) which can help you secure your crypto assets.

Dashlane * Recommended

Dashlane simplifies and secures your digital life across all your devices. Even if you are not concerned with security, you will feel a sense of elation as you slide through all your apps login pages with greater ease. Highly Recommended.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This service offers end to end encryption which is best and means there is a MASTER PASSWORD that only you possess and CANNOT BE RECOVERED by any means.

You can change your password at anytime, but you need your current password to change it.  That is different from losing your password and resetting it which is not possible in master password authentication systems, where

  • There is no forget password link.

  • There is no way for anyone including the company offering the service to recover access to your account.  This is what makes it secure.

  • Keeping your master password safe and secure is key.

Dashlane does offer a free plan and 30 day free trial for their premium service.  The free plan has a limit of 50 passwords and one device.  That might work for some people but most people have more than 50 passwords and 1 phone or computer.  The beauty of the premium plan is that you can put it on all your devices so no matter which device you are using your passwords are either pre-populated in the login forms or easily accessible in the Dashlane app for copy and paste.  Getting the Dashlane Premium plan will simplify your online experience greatly.

Tip:  When moving to any password manager it’s a good idea to setup your master password and begin adding all your existing passwords into the new password manager without changing the actual passwords initially.  You may want to give yourself some time to build the confidence that your master password is securely memorized and/or stored before you start changing all your passwords from things like ‘mydogsname123’, to something truly secure like;

Recommended Steps to Migrating to a Password Manager

  • FIRST, install the software, set your master password, setup the account without changing your application passwords to something new. Just get them into the password manager as a first step.

  • SECOND, after you are confident about using the software and your master password, visit the forgot password screens of your applications, and one by one, change them to long strong un-breakable passwords like the ones shown above with random combinations of letters, digits and symbols. Don’t worry the system will generate them for you on the fly in your app or allow you to generate your own in your browser if you install the free browser extension and use the manual password generator provided.  It’s not as complicated as you might think if you take it in steps, and once you get moved over into a password manager, you will wonder why you didn't do this before.

By using a password manager like Dashlane, you will always have access from any device because your passwords will always be available from any browser directly from the Dashlane.com website.  This is key because you will always have access to your passwords in case you lose any or all your devices. It can happen. Re-establishing your passwords with Dashlane is super easy. It's simply a matter of installing the app on your new devices and logging in. Everything is there and automatically synchronized.

The last point is that Dashlane, like many other password managers offers the feature of saving secure notes.  Secure notes are a place to store data that isn’t necessarily a password.  Just like an online notepad.  There are also secure methods of sharing that data with others.  This can be very useful for a variety of use cases including access credentials to cryptocurrency assets known as private keys.  This is another subject for possibly another guide.

If you are unable to choose Dashlane, I would try LassPass next.

Note: On thing to consider if you don’t go with the recommendation of Dashlane is that some of the free services only cover one device.  So that means you won’t have access on both your computer and phone.  You will have to choose.  Choosing your phone over your computer probably makes sense, but remember if you choose to make long and complex passwords, which is ideal, you will have to retype them into your computer for each login.

Blogging

Blogging onto an immutable blockchain is now a reality. Here are two apps that are available today. Voice does not require a digital wallet to post but Decentium does, which is another subject altogether, possibly for another guide.

Voice Social Media App

Voice is a new way to interact on the web. It's a social media space where content creators get paid and everyone is a content creator. You get paid for liking posts because you are helping others find good content. That has value and Voice is designed to tap the value in each of us. It's in Beta at the moment, but works well and everything is written to a blockchain.

Users can spend their Voice tokens to promote their own posts and comments. If that increased exposure creates more token earning Voices(likes) than they had to spend on the promotion, they net gain Voice tokens. So normal regular users, even ones that choose not to post anything, but simply comment on other peoples posts, can earn tokens too! Everyone has a stake in the conversation.

Real Voices from Real People producing Real Content, Real Attention and Real Value

Real Voices Without Surveillance

Here is an article I wrote over a year ago on the subject Voice.com and the surveillance plans of Facebook and Whatsapp. Voice has now since been released into beta and the surveillance plans of Facebook and Whatsapp have now become a reality.

Everyone Deserves a Real Voice

Decentium Decentralized Blog

Built on the EOS blockchain Decentium provides a solid platform for sharing.  It’s not perfect or as mature as Facebook or Medium but it is far more censorship resistant as everything you write is permanently written to the blockchain.  Although it is possible to takedown the servers that serve the interface to the service, it is not possible to UN-WRITE whatever you have published.  Yes you can make edits to a page, but each saved version is PERMANENT, as in forever.  The only thing that changes is the page served up by the normal Decentium.org website which is different from the underlying blockchain that holds the data.  That’s blockchain.   Use this service if you need to an uncensorable record.
